The Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, is a famous research center founded by the Indian Ministry of Education in 1964. It officially started operating on October 20, 1965, and is located in the historic Rashtrapati Niwas, which was originally the home of Lord Dufferin, the Viceroy of India, in the late 1800s. Designed by architect Henry Irwin, the building is perched on Observatory Hill and offers stunning views of Shimla. Previously used as a summer residence for the President of India, it was converted into a research institute by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan after it fell into disuse. The institute, inaugurated by Dr. Radhakrishnan in 1965, was first led by Professor Niharranjan Ray.
